Abstract

Synthetic fibres, such as nylon and polyvinyl-alcohol and acetate fibres, are coated with an antistatic composition comprising a silica sol which is produced by adding, with stirring, SiX4 (where X is Cl, Br or I) in the presence of water to a mixture of an alkyl acetate and monohydric aliphatic alcohol.ALSO:An aqueous colloidal solution of silica is prepared by adding with stirring SiX4 (where X is Cl, Br or I and including mixed halides) in the presence of water to a mixed solution of alkyl acetate and monohydric aliphatic alcohol. Preferred substances are ethyl acetate, ethyl alcohol and silicon tetrachloride. The solution can be diluted with the alcohol or the alcohol/acetate mixture used in the reaction and the resultant colloidal solution aged for several days.
