Abstract

A non-aqueous antifoam composition is made by mixing (1) a siloxane of the formula <FORM:1079832/C3/1> in which at least 90% of the R radicals are methyl, any remaining R radicals being alkyl, alkenyl or aryl, and in which n has a value of from 5 to 50 inclusive, with (2) a finely divided silica and heating the mixture at a temp. between 50 DEG and 300 DEG C. for not less than 5 minutes. The siloxanes used will have viscosities at 25 DEG C. of from 1 to 100 cs. The silica is conveniently added portion by portion while the heated mixture is being agitated, and is preferably added in amount of 1 to 15% by wt. of the siloxane. A further quantity of siloxane may be added to the mixture after heating. Examples are given of the above preparation. Uses.-As defoamants in aqueous systems, such as in the production of pharmaceuticals by fermentation processes.
