Abstract

An elastomer is made by reacting (a) a siloxane of the formula HO[SiR2O]nH, (b) a silane of the formula R1Si(OAc)3 or Si(OAc)4 in amount such that there is at least 0,33 mol. of R1Si(OAc)3 or at least 0,25 mol. of Si(OAc)4 per mol. of Si-bonded OH group in siloxane (a), and (c) MgO in amount such that there is at least 1,5 mols. of MgO per mol. of silane (b), wherein each Ac is a saturated aliphatic monoacyl radical derived from a carboxylic acid, each R and R1 is a monovalent hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon (saturated or unsaturated) or cyanoalkyl radical, and n is an integer of at least 5. In a modification, a part of siloxane (a) may be reacted at room temperature with silane (b) to form a reactive intermediate (d) of the formula (AcO)2SiR1O[R2SiO]nSiR1(OAc)2 or (AcO)3SiO[R2SiO]nSi(OAc)3, which can be substituted for silane (b) in the elastomer-forming process. Reaction occurs spontaneously upon mixing the above reactants, usually at a temperature within the range of 15 DEG to 100 DEG C., to produce a cured rubber. Plasticizers, dielectric materials, oxidation inhibitors, heat stability additives, pigments and fillers such as reinforcing silica fillers which have been hydrophobed as described in Specification 699,759, may also be added. In typical examples (1) methyl triacetoxy silane and MgO were added to a base composition consisting of two liquid 3.3.3-trifluoropropylmethyl siloxanes, one having terminal OH groups and the other terminal methyl radicals, a hydrophobed reinforcing silica and powdered Al, and the resulting mixture was poured into a container and cured in 18 hours at room temperature; and (6) MgO and HO[Si(CH3)2O]300H were dispersed in a petroleum ether solution of a gum of the formula HO[Si(CH3)2O]3000H, a trimethylsilyl-surface modified SiO2 and methyl triacetoxysilane and the resulting composition cured, after application to a metal panel, to a tough rubber in 18 hours at 200 DEG C.
