Abstract

647,096. Sliding windows balanced by springs. PREMIER METAL PRODUCTS CORPORATION. March 31, 1948, No. 9116. Convention date, Dec. 6, 1947. [Class 20 (iii) ] A double hung metal window has auxiliary stiles mounted against the stiles of a separate frame fitted in the window opening and has a pair of sashes guided in the auxiliary stiles, sash counterb alancing means which comprises expansion springs housed in each auxiliary stile, being provided. In form shown, a pair of extruded aluminium auxiliary stiles 11 are secured one to each of the vertical sides of a window frame 10 of the same material, which is fixed in the window opening. Each stile 11 extends between the sill 16 and top rail 17 of frame 10 and is formed with a central portion 32 which connects a pair of channels 33 and 34, the latter being flanked by housings 34 and 35 of round sectional form. Upper and lower sashes 12 and 13 slide in the channels 33 and 34<SP>1</SP> whilst housings 34 and 35 accommodate the counterbalancing means, consisting in helical expansion springs 51 which are secured to the top rail 17 and the lower corners of each sash. The portion 32 is flared to provide a snap-on head for a a metal strip 39 which has flared portions 40 engaging sashes 12 and 13 at the sides thereof to press them outwardly against lips 38 formed along the edges of housings'34 and 35, so preventing draught and the rattling of the sashes. The glass pane of each sash is provided with top and bottom sash bars only, these terminating short of stiles 11, the pane itself extending into the opposed channels 33 or 34<SP>1</SP> at each side. The meeting bars are formed with overlapping lips for draught prevention and locking means 15 is provided.
