[Class 20 (iii).] Relates to window constructions of the kind comprising an outer fixed frame carrying a sliding sash and a hinged transom window, the whole forming a unit which can be assembled at the factory. According to the invention, the sliding sash 4, Fig. 2, and top-hinged transom window 5 both engage with a meeting rail 40 of the window frame 3 and form a weatherproof joint therewith. In the form shown, the frame 3 is of metal and comprises a sill 6, head jamb 7, and stiles 8, and is connected by rivets 14 to a trim 13 which is secured to the plating or structure 1, as of a ship, for example. The sash 4 comprises a bottom rail 21, side rails 22, Fig. 4, and a top rail 23, the side rails being formed with laterally extending portions 25 which engage in grooves 26 in the stiles 8. The top rail has an outwardly and downwardly extending portion 30 which engages with the meeting rail 40, while the lower rail abuts against a shoulder 27 of the sill 6. The transom window is connected by hinges 32 to a head plate 31 and its top and side members are formed with inwardly projecting portions which engage respectively with L-shaped members 39, 38. A top well 44 receives the sliding sash when the latter is raised. The top and side rails of the transom window and the rails 21, 22 of the sash 4 may be strengthened by reinforcing bars 46. To facilitate glazing, the top rail 23, Fig. 5, of the sliding sash 4 is removable, and is detachably connected to the side rails by screws or bolts 48 which pass through the top rail and into the reinforcing bars 46. The sash is locked in any position by a catch comprising a plunger which is adapted to engage in one of a number of holes provided in the stiles 8.
