In a window construction having fixed and sliding sashes in a main frame, all the frames are constructed from bar members of formed or extruded section 6, Fig. 8, having a major plane, portion 7 with parallel inner and outer sides, connected together, by butt or mitre joints, by fixing screws joints, by fixing screws secured in the ends of channels 14 formed by ribs 13 extending along the outer sides and shaped so as to provide restricted slot-like openings 15 for the channels, sash locating flange 11 and framework treating flange 10 extending normally from opposite sides of portion 7 and the flange 10 being weakened along a median line 19. A sill-engaging flange 8 and beads 12, 16 for locating sash glazing bars and preventing run-off and of moisture, respectively, may be additionally provided on the bar members. The channels 14 receive and locate F-shaped glazing beads 27, Fig. 5 for the fixed sashes 24. The sliding sash includes a sill H-section 43, locating a nylon anti-friction block 48 engaging the flange 11 on the framework. Weather strips 49 are secured in the sill 43 and rails of the sash to engage the flange 11 on the sill and jambs and head sections 18, 20. A flyscreen 56 secured in a hinged frame 53 by resilient plastic cord 57. covers the sliding sash openings. Putty &c. 30 fills the space between the pane of the fixed sashes and the beads 27. The slots 47 in the H-sections 50 are serrated or grooved to ensure that the putty &c. 30 is securely held in position. The rails 39, 51 Fig. 3 of the sliding sash have hand grips 42, 52, and the vertical outside meeting rails 39 on the sash and the mullion 35 have abutments 37, 41 respectively to engage each other in the closed position of the sash. The portion below the line 19 of the flange 10 of the transom 20, Fig. 5 has been cut off and the portion 60 extended.
