Abstract

830,248. Doors; windows. CLIFTON, L. H. May 9, 1957, No. 14815/57. Class 20(3) The upper and lower U-section rails 2, 3 of a frame for a sliding door or window have corresponding pairs of intermediate flanges 5a, 5a or 7a, 7a respectively which provide guide channels for the upper and lower edges of three co-planar pairs of panels 11, 11, 12, 12, and 13, 13. The rails are rigidly interconnected by U-section stiles 4 to form the frame, the end portions of which are built in to a cavity wall 1. The bottom rail 3 located within and secured to the ends of an L-shaped member 8, has, in the region normally disposed in the window opening 10, a removable part 9 which can either be hinged to the member 3 as at 20 and have a coupling extension 28 or have tongues which detachably engage corresponding rabbets in the inner flange 7 of the member 3. A transverse element 21 may be provided at the centre of the removable part 9 to limit the: maximum closed position of the co-acting panels and prevent movement of coupled pairs of panels. When the panels are retracted an apron 24, pivotally mounted to the vertical limb of the L-shaped member spans the channel 23 the apron 24 being tilted vertically when it is desired to close the panels. Weep holes 25 in the bottom of the guide channels discharge into a sump 26 having outlets 27. The pairs of sashes may be individually, and selectively, slid towards the ends of the frame for location in the retracted, inoperative,. positions or, across the window opening 10 in the operative position side covers 14 being secured to the ends of the frame to form casings which are enclosed by the brickwork. The inner, central, and outer pairs of panels are provided respectively with insect netting or burglar proof material, glass or like panes, and louvre slats, rollers 15 being mounted in the bottom rails of the panels to co-operate with raised track portions 16 within the lower guide channels. The track portions 16 are preferably of semi-circular cross-section. To prevent rattling of the panels spring-loaded ball catch members are mounted in bores in the guide-channelengaging faces of the panels. One sash may be accommodated in each pair of channels, a casing being provided, in this case, on one side of the window only.
