Abstract

378,529. Ships' windows ; frames ; glazing. KAWNEER CO., 1105, South Front Street, Niles, Michigan, U.S.A. May 15, 1931, No. 14478. Convention date, July 14, 1930. [Class 20 (iii).] A window construction, suitable for ships' windows or other uses, comprises a fixed frame 2, Fig. 2, and two sliding sashes 3, 4 which latter can be moved together as a unit and have interengaging rails 22, 28 which provide a weathertight seal between the sashes. A further feature consists in providing the frame 2 with a top well 48 which receives the sliding sashes when the same are fully raised. In the form shown, the frame 2 comprises a head jamb 13, stiles 9, and a sill 5 mounted on a stool 6 and connected bv rivets 8 to a trim 7 which is secured to the plating 1 of the ship. Connected to the frame and forming part thereof is a head-plate 14 which bridges between the stiles 9 and is connected bv rivets 15 to a metal trim 16 secured to the plating 1. The upper sash 3 has an upper channel-shaped rail 18 which is formed with an outwardly extending portion 19 and downwardly extending flange 20 to form a channel which is felt lined and engages with a rib on the head-plate 14. The interengaging rails 22, 28 are similarly constructed. Ths side rails 25, 32 of the sashes are formed with doubled over portions which slide respectively in grooves 27, 34 of.the'stiles. To the upper sash is secured a bar or projection 45 which forms an abutment for the lower sash so that both sashes are raised into the well bv manipulating the lower sash. Channel-shaped pieces of felt 40 are inserted between the panes 39 and their respective sash frames, and the side and bottom rails of the sashes are reinforced with reinforcing bars 38. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also a sash-frame construction in which the upper rail of each sash is made removable to facilitate the glazing operation. As shown in Fig. 4 (Cancelled), the top rail 28 is secured to the side rail 32 by a bolt 42 which passes through a countersunk opening in the top rail and screws into the upper end of the reinforcing bar 38. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
