Abstract
646,016. Uniting by fusion. WELDING SUPPLIES, Ltd. Jan. 1, 1947, No. 81. Convention date, Jan. 4, 1946. [Class 83 (iv)] A flux-coated electrode 5 for use in automatic or semi-automatic arc-welding, wherein a series of rod-shaped electrodes are operated in succession along the seam x, each being automatically started by the arc of the preceding electrode, has the welding end covered by an electrically insulating layer 9 such as lacquer, which is destroyed when heated by an adjacent arc. Premature starting of the arc at the new electrode, e.g. if sparks or droplets from the burning electrode enter the gap 6 between the tip of the second electrode and the work is thus avoided. The covering 9 may be coloured so as to indicate the type of electrode. The electrodes 5 are carried by holders on arms 2 pivoted on stands 1 arranged along the seam, the end of the second electrode, which is connected to the current source, being situated at the point where the first electrode has been consumed to a short stump 5<SP>1</SP>, so that the arc from this stump starts the arc between the second electrode and the work. Specification 623,383, [Group XL (c)], is referred to.
