Abstract
798,292. Welding by fusion. BRITISH OXYGEN CO., Ltd. June 16, 1955 [June 17, 1954], No. 17803/54. Class 83 (4). Gas shielded arc spot-welding apparatus is provided with a timing device which stops the feeding of a consumable electrode at a predetermined time after the welding current is switched on so that the electrode burns back until the arc is extinguished. The flat-ended gas nozzle 4 of a welding gun 1 is held against the workpiece 14, and recesses 8 in the end of the nozzle 4 allow the shielding gas to escape. On depression of a trigger 16, shielding gas is supplied to the nozzle 4, a motor M drives rolls 12 to feed the electrode 9 and alternating welding current is switched on and the timing device is energized. When, in the timing device, a condenser C is charged, a relay B disconnects the motor M so that the electrode is burnt back until the arc extinguishes. The motor M is independently controllable by a button 23 on the butt 2 of the welding gun. The Provisional Specification states that the electrode may be in the form of short lengths of rod.
