Abstract
913,207. Arc torches. FOSTER WHEELER Ltd; Jan. 26, 1959 [Jan. 27, 1958], No. 2661/58. Class 39 (3). [Also in Group XXII] An arc welding torch for internally butt welding a joint J between tubes T, S has a non- consumable needle electrode 10 rotatable about the axis of a holder 28 and arranged within a heat resisting electrically insulating tube 12 with its tip 14 adjacent a lateral opening 16 in the tube which tube forms a passage for the supply of inert gas, e.g. argon, to the tip 14. The electrode 10 which is a tungsten wire with a curved pointed tip 14 is mounted in a contact block 28 to which current supply cable 32 is pivotally connected. A tube 30 through which the gas is supplied is secured to a casing 18 having a projecting sleeve 20 which together with a collar 17 on the tube 12 serve to locate the apparatus within the tubes T, S. The tube and block 28 are rotated together by a wormwheel 19, screwed to. the tube 12 and to the block, and rotated by a motor through a flexible driving shaft 25 and a worm.
