Abstract
1336722 Welding by fusion BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDERS CABLES Ltd 17 June 1971 [18 March 1970] 13012/70 Heading B3R In a MIG torch, primarily for building up cylindrical or annular bodies of weld metal, the consumable electrode wire is fed through a rotatable guide tube 4 comprising a straight portion coaxial with the axis of rotation and an inclined end portion 7. Welding current is preferably supplied to both a non-rotary contact tube 12 and the guide tube 4. As shown the guide tube 4 is provided in an attachment a non-rotary body 1 of which is secured to a gas nozzle 2 surrounding the contact tube 12 of a conventional MIG torch. The guide tube 4 may be rotated by way of a pulley 5. The body 1 supports a gas housing 8, fed at 9, and a gas nozzle 10 or 11. Welding current remains connected to the conventional torch contact tube 12, but to provide a connection through bearings to the guide tube 4, and to avoid internal arcing, is also connected to the body 1 by leads 13. The wire itself does not rotate. In use, the torch may be moved parallel to the axis of rotation of the guide tube, or, for forming an external or large internal round layer, the torch may be orbited bodily in synchronism with the guide tube rotation.
