Abstract
546,302. Severing metals by electric heating. HIGH DUTY ALLOYS, Ltd., and HERON, J. A. Oct. 20, 1941, No. 17556. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XXII] Magnesium and other light alloys are severed by passing a current through the workpiece and an electrode of high heat resistance held in contact with or near the workpiece so that the heat generated by the resistance or arc fuses the metal. A carbon electrode 1 is held in jaws 5, 6 hinged at 4 and pressed together by a spring 7 embedded in flexible hose 10. Cooling liquid is fed through passage 16 to a space 19 in the jaw 5, from which it passes by a parallel passage to hose 10 'and thence to a space 23 in the jaw 6 from which it is discharged through conduits 25, 26, 30. The handle carries an operating button 27 for a control solenoid from which control leads 31, 32 pass to a sheath 33 which may be outside or inside the hose 30. The conductor 15 supplying the electrode may be outside or inside the hose 13. The electrode may be duplicated so that the two electrodes may be traversed in relation to the workpiece, or a single electrode may be used, and the circuit completed through the workpiece. The tool may include means for feeding an inert gas, e.g. sulphur dioxide, or projecting a flame or jet on to the metal.
