Abstract

834,980. Welding by fusion. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. June 25, 1958 [July 23, 1957], No. 20440/58. Class 83 (4). In gas-shielded arc spot-welding a pilot arc struck between an auxiliary electrode 12 and the non-consumable welding electrode 14 is transferred from the auxiliary electrode to the work 15 prior to the welding current being applied to fire the main arc and is restored to the auxiliary electrode after the main arc is extinguished. The auxiliary electrode 12 is a sheet or bar of copper electrically connected to the work. As shown in Fig. 2, the auxiliary electrode 12 is interposed between the work and the torch being removed when a spot-weld is to be made. During welding the gas nozzle 10 is pressed against the work. In a modification the auxiliary electrode is fixed relative to the torch and the work is positioned between the two electrodes 12, 14 when a weld is to be made. An automatic controlling and timing arrangement for operating the gas welding current and movements of the torch and auxiliary electrode is described.
