Abstract

570,512. Uniting by fusion. HUNTING, P. L., BOWRING, F. C., and BOOT, R. H. F. Dec. 15, 1943, No. 21056. [Class 83 (iv)] Overhead arc welding is effected under water by connecting the electrode to the positive terminal of an electric circuit connected to a supply which affords an open circuit voltage higher than that normal for welding in air, e.g. 80 to 100 volts, the voltage characteristics being so adjusted that the voltage falls rapidly with increase of current becoming about 30 volts with a welding current approximately 15 to 20 per cent less than that normal with the same size of electrode in air. The electrode may be provided with a thick flux coating and is held at an angle of about 30 degrees to the line of weld with the flux touching the work, so that a line weld may be completed by slight pressure on the electrode at right angles to the surface of the plates without moving the electrode along the seam. Two plates #" thick were lapped and overhead welded by a fluxcoated electrode having a core diameter of 5/32" and an overall diameter of 9/32" connected in a circuit having an open circuit voltage of 80 volts, the generator being such that on striking the arc the voltage fell to 30 volts with welding current of 160 amperes. Specification 559,033 is referred to.
