Abstract

645,486. Knitting-machines. DEXDALE HOSIERY MILLS. Aug. 7, 1947, No. 21669. Convention date, Aug. 19, 1942. [Class 74 (ii)] The needles of a straight bar machine are of hook formation and have co-operating with them separate beard points interposed from above. The beard points 47 are carried on pivoted arms 50 carrying trunnions 51 entering bearings 52 in sliding plungers 53a. The plungers 53a, urged towards the needles by springs 62, operate in sleeves 54 which are swung about a shaft 56 by the action of a cam 60 on the cam-shaft 12 of the machine, the cam 60 oscillating an arm 58 attached to the shaft 56. The trunnions 51 carry spring-loaded stops 67 which engage segments 70 on the bearings 52 to maintain the arms 50 aligned with the plungers 53a. The stops 67 may be raised to allow the points 47 to be swung clear of the needles and the points are held in this position by the engagement of the stops 67 with notches 72 in the segment 70. The swinging clear of the points permits a dent to engage a gear connected to the machine camshaft to prevent the machine operating and pressing off the work. The points 47 close the needle hooks 45 during the drawing of a new loop through the old, in the manner of a normal beard and are accurately positioned relative to the needles by the engagement of rollers 76, on arms 75 attached to the plungers 53a, with cam surfaces 77 on the needle bar. During fashioning, cam surfaces 78 on the arms 42 of the fashioning point mechanism engage rollers on the trunnions 51 to slide the plungers 53a against the springs 62 to clear the points 47 from the needles and shogging of the camshaft causes the arm 58 to be actuated by a cam 80 during this period. The motion of needles, sinkers, knock-overs and fashioning points is as is normal in the art and an ordinary Cotton type machine may be adapted.
