[Class 74 (ii)] In a tricot - type knitting - machine having stationary sinkers, movable thread guides located thereabove and sinker nibs, the hook knitting-needles and co-operating tongues are moved longitudinally by eccentric-operated means and, at the same time, bodily laterally, all in timed relation to effect knitting operations. The needle-bar 44 and torque bars 43 (and thus the needles N and tongues T) are given individual figure-eight movements, Fig. 4, by shafts 33, 39, reciprocated by eccentrics on a shaft 18, through bores in blocks 25 themselves reciprocated laterally, at twice the frequency of reciprocation of shafts 33, 39, by eccentrics 29 on a shaft 19. Each needle moves through a curve N, C, carrying the tongue with it, and, at the same time, the tongue reciprocates in its groove, in a straight line represented by TM. The nibs 49, 51 may be replaced by movable nibs 100, Fig. 23 (not shown), reciprocated by eccentrics on a shaft 110, driven at the same speed as shaft 18. Thread guides 63, 63x may be reciprocated vertically, along lines represented by T'G, T<SP>2</SP>G, from a shaft 20 rotating at .the same speed as shaft 18; or, Fig. 29, may be moved in a circular path, at the same frequency as that of the needle and needletongue reciprocation, by eccentrics 115c, eccentric blocks 114c and a cross-rod 113c on which the guides 63c and 63xc are mounted. By means of another eccentric 119 on shaft 19c (corresponding to shaft 19), linkwork 120-124 and adjustable pivot points 122, 125, 126, the paths of movement of needles and tongues may be modified. The thread guides may be racked by pattern wheels acting in opposition to springs and driven from the main eccentric shaft. The threads are tensioned by pivoted levers 71, 72 and tension rods 73 bearing adjustable tension springs 74.
