Abstract
622,651. Knitting-machines. DEHN, S. G. (Vanity Fair Mills, Inc.). April 18, 1946, No. 12045. [Class 74 (ii)] The supporting means for the needles, sliding tongues therefor, and sinkers, are mounted on a single supporting shaft. Sinker nibs and the needles and tongues have similar driving means comprising adjustable eccentrics operating guided plungers which have the bars holding the instruments at one end and the eccentric connecting rods at the other. As described, the knitting loops are drawn through a base cloth. The needles 34 are operated vertically from the eccentrics 17 on a shaft 2 through the connecting rods 16, the plungers 25 and needle bars 32. The plungers 25 slide in guides 4 rigidly attached to the supporting shaft 168. The sinker nibs 96 are operated by a shaft 74, geared directly to and turned at the same speed as the shaft 2. The sinker nib plungers slide horizontally in guides rigidly secured to a second supporting shaft 3 and are advanced to hold the fabric during the upward motion of the needles 34. The sinkers 173, which throw off the loops during the downward motion of the needles, are stationary and their bars 171 are attached to the needle plunger guides 4. Thread guides 149 are actuated through plungers 120 sliding in guides 99 secured to the supporting shaft 3, by cams 103 on the shaft 74, which act on sliding carriages 112 at one end of the plungers. The carriages 112 are supported by brackets 107 secured to a supporting shaft 111. Thread guide heads 150 have bearings 135 which slide on pins 132 in brackets 128 on supporting shafts 127. Longitudinally adjustable thread guide racking bars 136 are moved in the guide heads 150 at right angles to the direction of motion imparted by the cams 106 by pattern wheels 174, 178 mounted on an end frame of the machine and operated by gearing from the shaft 74. The racking bars 136 are prevented from turning by arms 137 secured to them and sliding on pins 140 housed in the guide heads 150. The racking bars 136 are held against the pattern wheels 174, 178 by arms 201 and springs 202 mounted on the opposite end frame of the machine to that carrying the pattern wheels. Thread guide bars 143 are adjustably secured to the racking bars 136. Lubrication pockets and channels are provided in the bearings 135 of the guide heads 150. In an alternative form the guide racking bars may fit in dovetail grooves in the guide head 150. The base cloth is advanced while the needles, holding threads, are free from it, by two pairs of rollers 187, 188, over which the cloth is passed. The rollers are actuated through a clutch 250. An arm 251 attached to the clutch 250 is oscillated by a cam 214 through a lever 232 pivoted on a shaft 228. The lever 232 is connected to the arm 251 by arms 236, 240, the arms 240, 251 being slotted for adjustment. The cam 214 is turned through gears 219, 220, 221 by the shaft 2. The gears turn a crank-arm 222, one end of which carries a roller 223 sliding in a slotted arm 216 secured to the cam 214. Lubricating channels are provided in the arm 251. The rollers 188 are connected by a chain drive. The machine can knit a fabric without using a base cloth.
