Abstract

597,098. Knitting; coating yarns. SCOTT & WILLIAMS, Inc. June 4, 1945, No. 14027. Convention date, July 1, 1944. [Classes 74 (ii) and 140] Seamless hosiery is marked during the knitting operation with a line in fugitive dye to indicate a wale or wales to be aligned with the edges of a pre-boarding form. The invention is described in connection with the production of a seamless nylon stocking that is set to a definite shape by subjecting it to heat or heat and moisture treatment in a pre-boarding operation, the stocking, for this purpose, having a guide mark along the back and sole or along the front or on both back and front. The colouring matter is applied to the yarn at the knitting point, through the medium of one or more selected needles, by a fountain brush 10-12 pivotally mounted on a bracket 1 on - the latch ring 550, Fig. 1, of a circular machine, such as that described in Specification 102,711, [Class 74 (ii)]. The brush 10 is moved into and out of engagement with the selected needles by a rod 26 connected to a bell crank 34 ; the outer arm 38 of which has a pin extending beneath a yarn finger F6 that is not used as a feeder but is operated as usual by a rod 460 and the main pattern drum 120. When the rod 460 drops, the finger F6 and the bell crank 34-38 are moved anticlockwise by springs 41, 40 respectively to swing the brush 10 against the hooks of the needles before they take yarn. To secure the raising of selected needles, the pattern butts of the jacks 736a, Fig. 5, for these needles are broken away so that these jacks are not influenced. by reader cams 820 and are thereby left in the path of a lifting cam 113. The patterning mechanism 800 and needle jacks 736 in general are of the type shown in Specification 383,840.
