Circular machines; needles.- Articles such as stocking legs knitted in a continuous string are divided off by transfer courses in which loops on cylinder transfer needles are placed on adjacent dial needles the wales in those courses being thereby reduced to the number of quills employed subsequently for running-on. Extra transfer courses may be worked for purposes of ornamentation. A group of transfer needles sufficient for the reduction required is placed in the cylinder; each needle is recessed at 66 to receive the free end 67 of a loop-receiving hook, the lower end of which is riveted at 69 to the stem 60. The butts 72 are longer than those of the ordinary needles and are operated by a supplementary cam 80 mounted on a radial sliding rod 83 and pushed in, for transfer purposes by an arm 91 which is carried round with the cams and is controlled through intermediate levers from a disc on a pattern controlled plunger. This disc also controls the position of the dial and cylinder stitch cams. When the transfer needles rise on the cam 80, their loops are expanded and are received on shoulders or stops 71. A dial needle then enters one loop and the needle 60 retires leaving its loop on the dial needle.
