Abstract

526,570. Knitting. LAMBACH, F. March 20, 1939, No. 8882. Convention date, March 26, 1938. [Class 74 (ii)] Relates to the method of knitting stocking blanks on a straight bar knitting machine wherein the foot is knitted directly on to the leg and the first loop courses of the sole portions, beginning at the heel corners, are inter-knitted with the heels by transferring loops to the selvage needles that knit the heels 440, Fig. 17, on to the high heels 13, 14. The last loop courses of the two high heels and the first loop courses of the two sole portions 15, 16 are put on the needles in such a manner that the two high heels 13, 14 are adjacent and towards the centre. A single continuous heel is made by one carrier 480. In another form the high heels are topped on to two inner spaced sets of needles 500, Fig. 10, and the soles to outer sets 500', the selvage loops of the high heels being spaced apart a distance c. The heel knitting then proceeds on the high heel needles, while the loops held by inactive needles are transferred inwardly to the extent of one to four needles at every one to three courses. The heels are knitted by means of two carriers 48 and two slur cocks 51, 51<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 11, moving in opposite directions on different levels. The sinker jacks 52 have cam surfaces 53, 53<SP>1</SP> and recesses 54, 54<SP>1</SP> so arranged that each slur cock operates its own sinkers. For rendering the sole needles inactive, the presser has a divided edge, there being fixed a centre portion 55 and movable side portions 56, secured at their lower ends to a holder 59. A cam 74 slides the holder 59 in and out of action by means of intermediate connections 69, 66, 64. A course or more may be knitted on sole and high heel portions before - beginning the heel. An attachment for controlling narrowing fingers 46 comprises a supporting rod 111, Fig. 28, urged by a spring 114 against a plate 115. A body 116 slidable on shaft 118 and carrying the plate 115 is urged by a spring 119 against a body 120. Spring 119 also holds a pin 123 on the body 120 in contact with a stepped segment 124. To change the basic position of the narrowing finger the body 120 is moved clear of the segment 124 by a rod 131 acting on a cam arm 132. The segment 124 is readjusted by the action of a pattern chain 141 on a rack 138 gearing with teeth 137. For transferring loops, a stepped segment 127 is operated to displace the narrowing finger a distance of one to four needles.
