Abstract

674,528. Knitting. HOWARD HOSIERY MILLS, Inc. Feb. 20, 1950 [Feb. 19, 1949], No. 4338/50. Class 74 (ii). Plain loop courses alternate with courses containing laterally elongated lock loops, both legs of each lock loop extending horizontally and laterally from its needle wale of origin across the legs of at least one plain loop of at least one adjacent needle wale, to position its bight portions in the succeeding needle wale and the bight portion of each lock loop being joined with the next lock loop of the course by a plain needle loop of the succeeding course at the needle wale of origin of said next lock loop. Look stitches 4, occurring in courses L, separated by one or more plain knit courses P, extend coursewise over two or more additional wales. The closed end 4a of each lock stitch overlaps the open end of an adjacent lock stitch in that course and the two are held together by a loop of the succeeding plain knit course. The lock stitches are staggered wale-wise from lock-course to lock-course, so that a run in any wale will be intercepted. The fabric is produced by the use of points 5 having the greater part of a side wall and of the back wall cut away. The points are lowered to bring their tips 12 into the usual groove on those needles 1 bearing loops which are to become lock loops, and the upper ends of the needle beards 15 into grooves 10a of the points to close the beards. Needles and points are then lowered simultaneously, the needles being at first moved more quickly so that their beards open, to pass outside the loops whilst the point tips 12 pass through the loops. The needles are then moved backwards, away from the points 5, and needles and points are moved upwardly until the points are above the knockover bits. The points are then moved laterally the desired number of needles and needles and points are moved down until the upper ends of the needles are in the grooves 10a and both are below the knockover bits. The points are then move upwardly to their uppermost position to give up the loops to the needles which rise, more slowly, until their tops are above and inside the bights 4a of the elongated loops, which are below the sinkers and which, on the next downward movement of the needles, enter the beards.
