Abstract
642,882. Road-vehicle spring-suspensions. OSTER, L. E. W., MONTROSE-, and POLLOPAS PATENTS, Ltd. July 27, 1945, No. 19301. Convention date, Sept. 5, 1941. [Class 108 (ii)] In a suspension particularly for rear wheels of vehicles which move mainly in a forward direction, the rear wheel axis is constrained to move in a straight or curved trajectory in such a way that the angles # formed by the perpendiculars to the tangent to the trajectory, with the road surface, are not less and are preferably greater than, the angles # formed by the line joining the centre of gravity of the vehicle and the wheel axis, with the road surface. In the case of a curved trajectory the angles # increase with increasing upward wheel deflection. In the form shown in Fig. 1d the wheel bearing 3 is guided by slides 2 against the action of a coiled spring (not shown). In a second construction (Fig. 2, not shown) the wheel is carried by a link which slopes downwardly and rearwardly to a pivotal point on the chassis. In a third construction (Fig. 3, not shown) the wheel is connected to the chassis by a watt parallel linkage. On deceleration the rear end of the vehicle tends to move downwardly and on curves lateral canting is less pronounced since only a component of the static load acts in the direction of action of the resilient member.
