Abstract

503,341. Vehicle spring - suspensions. MACBMTH, C. Oct. 6, 1937, No. 27024. [Class 108 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXI] In a road-vehicle suspension in which an auxiliary rubber spring comes into operation on excessive deflection of a link or lever arm controlled by a main spring, the rubber spring a, Fig. 1, is formed with a cam-like contour having its peak near one end situated towards the pivotal axis d of the link or arm c, and diminislies 'in depth away from such axis so that, when loaded, its depth is reduced proportionately along its length. For example, when the arm c moves from position x to position y the various sections of the rubber block are each shortened to 60 per cent of their original depth. In order to prevent undue wear of the cam surface, the rubber block may be covered by a metal shoe coated with a thin layer of rubber to obtain silent operation. The block may be mounted on the chassis b or on the arm c. In the application to a motor cycle, the link j, Fig. 4, connected at one end j<1> to the spindle of the front wheel, is attached at its axis end to a torsion rubber unit to which the fork arms k are also attached as described in Specification 496,219, [Group XXXI]. The lever engages with rubber blocks a<4>, a<5> disposed on each side of the spindle of the torsion spring and having a cam-shaped contour as described.
