Abstract
482,134. Steering trailer vehicles. SCHROTER, H., and SCHROTER, K. Sept. 23, 1936, No. 25881. Convention date, April 2. [Class 79 (v)] Means for preventing lateral oscillations of trailer vehicles comprise springs or vibration dampers which render steering to one side more difficult than to the other. The springs &c. may oppose steering movement in one direction only, or may oppose movement in one direction more than in the other. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the drawbar 1 is pivoted at 3 to the trailer frame or axle 8 and is connected by links 4 to the steering arms 5 of the steerable stub axles 7. A spring 9 is connected to the drawbar and to the axle so as to render steering more difficult to the right than to the left. This construction may also be applied to trailers with centrallypivoted axles. In the construction shown in Fig. 7 the drawbar 1<1> is connected to a turntable 2<1> mounted on the rigid axle 7<1> and pivoted at 3<1> to the trailer frame. A cam 10<1> fixed to the turntable is engaged by an adjustable spring-loaded plunger 13<1> mounted on the vehicle frame, the cam being so shaped as to render steering in one direction more difficult than in the other. This construction may also be applied to trailers with stub axles. Modifications as described in which (1) a coiled spring is mounted on the pivot 3 or 3<1> and connected between the frame and the drawbar or axle, and (2) a compression spring is used instead of the tension spring 9, Fig. 1. Band brakes or fluid-pressure dampers may be used instead of springs.
