Abstract

481,968. Motor-car trailer drawbar attachment. APPLETON, J. A. Sept. 24, 1936, No. 25919. [Class 103 (v)] The after end of a drawbar is passed through a rocking-shaft having bearings in or on the sides of a case or chamber attached to the drawn arm of a motor-car trailer and so constructed that the drawbar is capable of angular movement in a vertical plane about the rocking-shaft, such angular movement being controlled by springs confined within or attached to the case or chamber. In one form, Fig. 1, helical springs M and M<1>, which may be of different strengths, act on the solid forward end of a frame E, the after end of which encircles the rocking-shaft F through which the drawbar A is passed. Alternative means are shown at N and O of locating the springs in the chamber K, which is in two halves bolted together and attached to the drawn arm of the trailer by angle irons. Brass plates may be fitted on the sides of the chamber to provide sliding surfaces for the frame E. The rocking-shaft, the forward end of the frame E and an adjustable collar B provide stops for the usual springs C and D which take up longitudinal shock and a safety bolt H is provided to limit longitudinal movement of the drawbar relative to the chamber. The end J of the drawbar, which may apply the trailer brake on overrunning, is slightly rounded. In a modification, Fig. 4, the frame E is replaced by a metal block S having a central Venturi-shaped aperture T and sliding on two rods V bolted to the chamber. An additional spring W is provided to take some strain off the rods V. In another modification, leaf springs replace the helical springs M and M<1>.
