Abstract
642,877. Determining physical qualities of materials. EUGENE, Ltd. Oct. 22, 1948, No. 27522. [Class 37] Apparatus for determining the degree of dryness of hair by measuring its resistance comprises two spaced electrodes 11, Fig. 1, forming a probe to be placed in the hair and connected in a circuit, Fig. 2, which indicates the resistance on a meter 16, or operates a warning device when the resistance reaches a predetermined value, or operates a relay 25 to open the heating circuit at a predetermined value of resistance. The resistance of the hair, together with resistances 19, 20 form a potentiometer for biassing the grid of valve 13 so that when the former is high the grid is approximately at cathode potential, causing the cathode current to be sufficiently large to energize relay 17, breaking one lead from the probe by contacts 22 and cutting off the main power supply by de-energizing relief relay 25 through contacts 24. A plurality of probes may be employed in parallel, and the meter 16 may be replaced by other forms of visual or audible indicators.
