657,548. Detecting smoke in gases. ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENTS, Ltd., HITCHCOX, G. I., and TAYLOR, G. R. Dec. 15, 1947, No. 32999. [Class 47 (i)] Apparatus for testing gases comprises an open ionisation space 1 subjected to radio-active rays from a source 2 and provided with two electrodes 3, 4 connected in a bridge circuit with resistances 11, 12 and a closed ionisation space 13 with electrodes 15, 16 or a resistance, with a thermionic valve 8 to detect changes in the space 1 and so operate an alarm or indicator relay 10. In a modification, Fig. 3, the space 1 comprises an open container 18 which forms one electrode. The other electrode comprises a closed inner container 17 which forms the space 13 and within which is a further electrode 19.
