Abstract

An ionic smoke detector comprises a measuring chamber which is identical to a sealed reference chamber. A single radioactive source irradiates both chambers which are concentric to reduce volume required. The detector comprises a chamber assembly (4) and a signal processing assembly (6). An open central chamber (8) forms the measuring chamber while a closed concentric peripheral chamber comprises the reference chamber (10). A plutonium radioactive source (12) irradiates both chambers and the differences in potential between the chambers are detected at electrodes (16, 18) for each chamber w. r. t. a common electrode (14). The chamber electrodes are connected into a Wheatshore bridge circuit and comparators activate alarm circuits.
