Abstract

790,419. Electric tests. CENTRAL ELECTRICITY AUTHORITY, and POTTER, E. C. Sept. 15, 1955 [Sept. 15, 1954], No. 26723/54. Class 37. A device for detecting low concentrations of halogens in water comprises electrodes of different metals which form an electrolytic cell with the water to be tested and a high-value ohmic resistor situated outside the water connected across the electrodes. In use the voltage drop across the resistor proportional to the current flowing therethrough shows a marked change when the last trace of halogen is removed. In Fig. 1 a glass or plastic tube A encloses wire electrodes C, D connected to high-value resistor E and stainless steel leads H, J. The electrodes C, D-one platinum and the other tungsten emerge as shown, or may be flush with glass or plastic seal B. The leads H, J may be connected to a pH meter or a millivoltmeter. The assembly is particularly directed towards detecting the iodine content of water but may be used for detecting the content of other halogens such as bromine and chlorine.
