Abstract

954,557. Electrolytic testing apparatus. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 15,1960 [Nov. 18, 1959], No. 39202/60. Heading G1N. A conductivity cell includes an open-ended insulating tube which contains the liquid for measurement, two current electrodes positioned a distance of at least the diameter of the tube from the tube ends, two connected voltage electrodes located one at each end of the tube, and a third voltage electrode located near to one of the current electrodes. A substantially constant current is passed between the electrodes 2 and 3, Fig.1, which may be of pointed shape and are mounted in insulating tube 1 immersible in the liquid, the resistance between the electrodes being small compared with resistor 10. The pair of connected, annular, earthed voltage electrodes 4 and 5, and the third voltage electrode 7, are connected via amplifier 8 to measuring instrument 9, the reading of which is independent of any contact resistance between the current electrodes and the liquid. For measuring the conductivity of a liquid flowing through the metal pipe 11, Fig.2, the current electrodes and the third voltage electrode are passed through the walls of the pipe 11 and the insulating coating 1, the exposed pipe beyond the ends of the coating forming the pair of connected voltage electrodes. The conductivity of contaminated electrolytes and suspensions may be measured.
