[Class 74 (ii)] During the production of each of closelyrecurrent courses that alternate with intervening courses, a stretch or tension is applied to the loops of closely-recurrent wales that alternate with intervening wales; and during the production of each of the intervening courses, the stretch or tension is applied to the loops of the intervening wales. Sinkers 4 are urged inwardly by one or other of two spring rings, 5a, 5b. The sinkers are of two kinds and may recur in, say, a 1 Î 1, 1 Î 2, 2 Î 2 or 2 Î 3 sequence, those sinkers of one kind being cut away to miss one ring 5b, and those of the other kind being cut away to mix the other ring 5a. One ring is rendered ineffective in alternate courses, and the other ring ineffective in the intervening courses, e.g. by two series of bellcrank or other levers 7, pivoted on the sinker ring 2 and having butts 7a, 7b alternately engaged in succeeding courses, in the vicinity of the knock-over point, by cams such as 8a, 8b movable to and fro. In a modification (not shown) the loop tensioning is effected by urging selected needles outwardly at or subsequent to the knock-over, e.g. by a disc or wheel located inside the needle circle and having its periphery notched to accommodate spaced needles; the disc may be driven by engagement with the needles. During reciprocatory knitting, the alternating selection is suspended, so that all sinker loops or needle loops of a course receive like treatment.
