Abstract

642,062. Disconnectible couplings. BRUNING, E. F. July 13, 1948, No. 18793. .Convention date, July 29, 1947. [Class 99(1)] Tubes each terminating in a nipple 12, 14 normally closed by a valve 74, 76 having a boss 106, 108 projecting beyond its end face 70, 72 are coupled by a sleeve 36 which locks the nipples in abutting relationship whereupon the valves are opened, locking being effected by means such as telescoping collars 46, 48 which force locking members such as balls held in tapered holes in the sleeve into engagement with the nipples. The collars are urged by a spring 56 against snap rings 52, 54 forming stops limiting outward movement of the collars, grooves 62, 64 in the collars partially receiving the balls when the collars are in the inner positions. The sleeve has a groove 110 to retain a sealing ring 112 with lips 114 and 116 adapted to engage the inner ends of the nipples. The ring 112 may be replaced by a pair of rings of U- sections, Fig. 5 (not shown), or by a single ring of V-section, Fig. 6 (not shown), and the inner ends of the nipples may be tapered and shouldered to engage in O- rings lying in grooves in the sleeve, Fig. 7 (not shown).
