Abstract

641.391. Supplying liquid fuel. NASH ENGINEERING CO. Feb. 27, 1948, No. 6063. Convention date, Sept. 19, 1945 [Class 7(iii)] [Also in Groups XXVI and XXVIII] Fuel is delivered to the main fuel pump of an engine by way of a booster pump and an emergency pump which are connected in series and are driven simultaneously and continuously by a common driving means, the emergency pump being adapted to be made effective on failure of the main pump. As shown diagramatically in Fig. 5, a centrifugal booster pump 18 delivers fuel by way of a check valve 111 to a main pump 109. An emergency pump 20 of the sliding-vane type which is connected between the pumps 18 and 109 is normally ineffective, but comes into operation during emergency conditions (as at starting or upon failure of the main pump) when the high pressure in chamber 112 closes the valve 111. A relief valve 100 is provided. The booster and emergency pumps are combined, together with a liquid-ring priming pump, in a motor-driven submersible unit similar to that described in Specification 636,712. The pump 20 may be replaced by other positive displacement types, viz: piston, gear, lobe and screw pumps.
