Abstract
844,055. Liquid-ring pumps. HAMWORTHY ENGINEERING Ltd., and POLLAK, F. May 16, 1957 [May 16, 1956], No. 15274/56. Class 110 (1). In a water-ring priming pump, one or more openings are provided on the suction side of the water-ring chamber at the position where the pressure is between atmospheric pressure and the maximum pressure provided by the pump, whereby the pump may be automatically unloaded by varying the pressure at the suction opening. In the water-ring pump shown, the double-lobe casing 12 is of elliptical shape, and a suction opening 15 and discharge openings 16 are provided. The pump is unloaded by discharging the water ring through openings 17, and loaded by the return of water through the openings 17. For this purpose, the pressure at the suction opening 15 is varied to produce a corresponding variation in the pressure at the openings 17, whereby, if there is air pressure at the suction opening 15, water flows outwardly through the openings 17, whereas if there is a vacuum at the suction opening 15, water flows inwardly through the openings 17. The necessary variation of pressure at the suction opening 15 may be effected by means of a float gear connected to the suction side of the centrifugal pump being primed and operating a pair of valves whereby, when the float is in one position, the suction opening 15 is connected to atmosphere so that the pressure thereat is high, and when the float is in the other position the suction opening 15 is subjected to the vacuum produced at the suction side of the centrifugal pump.
