Abstract
Protective compositions melting at 150-250 DEG C. for coating metal and other articles by immersing them in the molten composition, e.g. at 220-240 DEG C., and then withdrawing them, comprises ethyl cellulose, a vegetable oil, a hydrocarbon plasticizer and a compatible resin thermally stable at the temperature at which the composition melts. The hydrocarbon plasticizer may be a mineral oil or a petroleum jelly and the resin may be coumarone resin, hydrogenated wood resin, Manila or Pontianak resin, or ester gum. The vegetable oil may be castor oil or cotton seed oil. The composition may comprise 20-30 per cent by weight of ethyl cellulose, 10-20 per cent of resin, 5-10 per cent of castor oil and 25-55 per cent of a hydrocarbon plasticizer which may be a steam cylinder lubricating oil. About 0.1-1.0 per cent, e.g. 0.25 per cent by weight of an antioxidant such as diphenyl-amine, phenyl-betanaphthylamine, di-phenylguanidine or hexyl catechol may be present in the composition, which may also contain about 1 per cent of a pigment such as titanium dioxide, iron oxide or lamp black. The composition does not flow at 90-100 DEG C.
