Abstract
A composition for the impregnation of fibrous material for the insulation of the conductors of cables or condensers comprises polyethylene, a petroleum insulating oil, and a micro-crystalline petroleum wax. There may be used 0.5 to 20 per cent. of polyethylene and 2 to 50 per cent. of wax. The composition may also include rosin, aromatic petroleum extracts, oxidation inhibitors, e.g. phenyl-b -naphthylamine, metal de-activators, e.g. N, N1-disalicylidene ethylenediamine, and polyisobutylene. In an example, a composition consisting of 10 parts polyethylene, 10 parts micro-crystalline, petroleum wax, 20 parts refined rosin, and 60 parts petroleum insulating oil of viscosity 400" Redwood at 60 DEG C. is prepared by blending the oil and rosin at 120 DEG C. raising the temperature to 150 DEG C. and adding the polyethylene in granular form and raising the temperature to 180 DEG C. this later addition being carried out together with the subsequent steps in an inert atmosphere, the wax being added when the polyethylene has dissolved, the material being then allowed to cool to 100 DEG C. and poured into suitable packages.
