Abstract

A composition for the impregnation of fibrous material for the insulation of the conductors of cables or condensers comprises petrolatum containing from 3 to 50 per cent of a synthetic hydrocarbon wax of melting point between 85 DEG and 120 DEG C., e.g. one made by the Fischer Tropsch process, with up to 40 per cent of polyisobutylene and/or polyethylene. There may be included up to 40 per cent of petroleum wax, rosin or other resins of low dielectric loss. Oxidation inhibitors, e.g. phenyl b -naphthylamine, and metal deactivators, e.g. N,N1-disalicylidene ethylenediamine may also be in corporated in the composition. In making the composition polyisobutylene and/or polyethylene may be dissolved in a synthetic hydrocarbon wax in an inert atmosphere with agitation at an elevated temperature, petrolatum being thereafter added. Or polyisobutylene may be dissolved in a solvent and a mixture of petrolatum and synthetic hydrocarbon wax added thereto, the solvent being then removed.
