Abstract

A composition comprising an insulating oil and a synthetic hydrocarbon wax with polyisobutylene and/or polyethylene is used for impregnating fibrous material used for insulating cables or condensers. The synthetic hydrocarbon wax may melt above 85 DEG C. and may be a product of the Fischer-Tropsch process or be produced by hydrogenation of less saturated naturally occurring hydrocarbons. It may comprise up to 60 per cent. by weight of the composition. The proportion of polyisobutylene or polyethylene is dependent upon the molecular weight of the polymer, e.g. up to 40 per cent. by weight of polymer of molecular weight approximately 1200-2500, and up to 10 per cent. by weight of polymer of molecular weight approximately 100,000. Petrolatum, rosin, and other resins of low dielectric loss, oxidation inhibitors and metal deactivators may also be present in the compositions. The polyisobutylene and/or polyethylene may be dissolved in the wax in an inert atmosphere and the insulating oil added, or the polymer may be dissolved in a solvent, the oil and wax added and the solvent removed. In an example a composition comprising polyisobutylene, a Fischer-Tropsch wax and an insulating oil is described. Specification 650,088 is referred to.
