Abstract

1399350 Petroleum-based gels STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 7 Sept 1972 [13 Sept 1971] 42549/71 Heading C5F [Also in Division H1] A water-blocking gel comprises a major proportion by weight of a liquid petroleum based oil in which is dispersed a minor proportion by weight of a solid gellant insoluble in the oil and not melting below 100‹ C, the gel being devoid of any gellant soluble in the oil and/or melting below 100‹ C. The gel fills the interstices of a sheathed cable composed of strands of plastics insulated conductors. The oil may be a paraffinic oil or an aromatic extract. The gellant may be granulated mica, silica (e.g. less than 1 micron) and certain clays (e.g. bentonite). Polar liquids such as alcohols, ketones or esters may also be present. In an example a composition comprises aromatic extract, a clay and propylene carbonate. Antioxidants, stabilizers, colour base and dispersing agents may also be present in the gel.
