Abstract
1,266,412. Cable joints and terminations. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. 27 Feb., 1970 [28 Feb., 1969], No. 10871/69. Addition to 1,157,435. Heading H2E. [Also in Division H1] A cable joint or termination is surrounded by an enclosure which is filled with an insulating mixture. The mixture comprises a fine grain filler having a maximum particle dimension of 750 microns, lumps of a solid substantially non- porous material and a liquid insulator which solidifies on cooling, adhering to the lumps of material. The mixture may be pre-mixed or the lumps may first be placed in the enclosure and a mixture of the fine grain filler and liquid poured in later. The lumps are preferably denser than the liquid insulator and may be gravel of maximum particle dimension 0À5 to 1À0 cm. or may be chippings of calcined flint, flint or granite. The fine grain filler may be fine grain sand of maximum particle dimension 200-500 microns. For filling a secondary enclosure for protecting large primary cable joint enclosures, lumps of maximum particle size 2cm. or greater may be used. A mixture for a resin-bonded glass fibre secondary joint enclosure surrounding a high voltage cable joint may contain one part by weight of asphaltic or Trinidad bituminous compound to three parts of gravel to three parts of bedding sand. These mixtures have a lower thermal resistivity than those previously employed.
