Abstract
A composition suitable for the insulation of cables, pipes, and the like, which is not affected by mineral oils, gas, tetrahydronaphthalene, consists of a coniferous root resin, having a melting point of approximately 100 DEG C., acid value 98, saponification value 140, soluble in acetone, alcohol, castor oil, and strong alkalies, partially soluble in benzene and coal tar solvents, insoluble in mineral and drying oils, mixed with a non-drying vegetable oil, preferably castor oil, and a powdered insulating mineral such as asbestos, infusorial earth, talc. The composition remains plastic, and may be applied as such, or as a coating on a base. According to an example, 100 parts of pine resin are melted with 120 parts of castor oil and 150 parts of asbestos, infusorial earth or talc are added. A wrapping to be impregnated is drawn through the mass, or the composition can be applied directly to the article to be protected.
