Abstract

Gamma ferric oxide hydrate is produced by precipitating a solution of ferrous sulphate, say of 15-20 per cent concentration with an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxide at 150-200 DEG F., maintaining the temperature until the slurry is thin, diluting and cooling the slurry by the addition of water or 0.5-2 per cent cold ferrous sulphate solution, and oxidizing by a current of air. The separated product is dried at 230 DEG F. and may be dehydrated at 450-500 DEG C.
