Abstract
A finely-divided cuprous powder comprising metallic copper particles with a cuprous oxide film thereon and a substantial proportion of cuprous oxide is added in minor amount to a Sorel type cement. The cuprous powder is obtained by treating "cement copper" or "precipitated copper sludge" from refineries in an impaction mill after or simultaneous with the removal of water. To prevent oxidation during transport a minimum of 22 per cent of water should be present in the sludge, and this reduced to between 0.2 and 0.4 per cent in two stages. The cement may be a dry mixture requiring gauging by either water alone or a solution of magnesium chloride. Specification 465,240 is referred to.
