Abstract
A polishing and abrading composition comprises a mixture of cerium oxide and an alkaline earth compound. Oxides, hydrates, and carbonates of the alkaline earth metals are specified, and in p particular, barium carbonate. An alkalizing ingredient is preferably included, such as a hydroxide, e.g., barium hydrate. The ingredients are in powdered form. In use the ingredients are dispersed in water, sufficient alkalizing ingredient being present to produce a hydrogen ion concentration of 7 to 9 and preferably 8. In preparing the compositions, the ingredients are preferably degreased such as by heating the ingredients in water in the presence of a coagulating agent. Sodium chloride or bicarbonate separately or together may be used or the corresponding potassium salts. Insoluble scum rises to the water surface and is periodically skimmed off. The supernatant liquid is finally drawn off.
