Abstract
Brass containing less than 80 per cent copper is subjected to the action of an acid aqueous solution of a cupric salt, heat-vulcanizable rubber stock is moulded against the surface thereof, and the assembly is heated to vulcanize the rubber and to bond the brass thereto. The solution may contain from 5 per cent copper sulphate pentahydrate up to saturation and 5-15 per cent sulphuric acid; alternatively, cupric nitrate, chloride or acetate or hydrochloric acid may be used. The brass surface is first cleaned and after treatment with the solution is washed and dried. The rubber stock may be natural rubber or a co-polymer of butadiene or isoprene and isobutylene such as butyl rubber.
