Abstract
A red iron oxide pigment is produced by adding to a ferrous salt solution maintained above 60 DEG C, preferably between 60 DEG and 90 DEG C, small amounts of a colloidal or highly disperse ferric oxide in aqueous suspension, in the presence of metallic iron, blowing air into the solution, filtering, washing, and drying the pigment produced at a low temperature, e.g. 80-120 DEG C. The colloidal &c. ferric oxide may be produced by dehydrating a ferric hydroxide gel by heating in an aqueous medium at 60-100 DEG C, or by adding a ferrous salt to an alkaline medium, e.g. milk of lime, or solutions of alkali metal or other alkaline earth metal hydroxides and/or alkali metal carbonates, at 50-90 DEG C, in an amount equal to 3/4 of the equivalent, oxidizing with air, and thereupon adding the remaining ferrous salt whilst blowing in air. Pickling solutions containing ferrous chloride or sulphate may be used as the main source of ferrous salt.
