Abstract
639,798. Glass. CORNING GLASS WORKS. Aug. 26, 1947, No. 23559. Convention date, April 21. [Class 56] Relates to apparatus for imparting a precise bore to previously-formed glass tubing. The rear end of the tube 40 is held by a rubber spool 36 pressed into contact with the tube by air pressure admitted to the surrounding chamber 37 and carried by a carriage 15 moved from left to right by screw and nut mechanism 18 operated by a motor 12, the carriage being restored to its initial position by a manually operated pinion 24 engaging a rack 25. The tube passes through a heater 70 and its forward end is drawn forward at a speed greater than that of the carriage 15 by rollers or other grippers 60, 61, at least one of which is positively driven. A former 46 is reciprocated within the softened portion of the tube by being carried by a chuck 47 which is moved in one direction by an eccentric 50 and in the other by a spring 52. The support 53 for the chuck reciprocating mechanism is itself manually slidable to permit initial positioning of the former 46. Specification 610,182 is referred to.
