Abstract

636,158. Drawing. HUBBARD, N. F. S., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 22,1948, No. 8416. [Class 83 (iv)] A method of releasing tube gripping means after drawing comprises accelerating the drawbar 3, and the drawn tube 14 relative to the carriage 1 when the tube leaves the die 15, so that the drawbar, or an extension thereof 2, impacts against the carriage, whereupon the momentum of the tube causes it to over run the grippers and thus release itself. A helical spring 7, held in compression by the drawing resistance, extends when the tube leaves the die, and drives a head 5 of the drawbar extension 2 against the end of the recess 6 in the carriage. This momentarily halts the drawbar and the inertia of the tube carries the tube forward and releases the internallygripping segments 16 of the tube gripping means described in Specification 633,606. In modifications the means urging the drawbar and carriage into engagement with each other comprises pneumatic or hydraulic pistons and rams, an explosive charge, or a rubber cushion, and said means may be contained within the sections of a telescopic drawbar.
