Abstract

695,956. Blasting detonators and annaratus for finishing detonators. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES. Ltd. June 1, 1951 [June 2, 1950], No. 13830/50. Class 9(i) [Also in Group XXII] Apparatus is provided, and a method described for attaching detonator tubes to resilient closure members by necking the mouth portion of the tube. The machine has a body 1 with a flanged base 2. Parallel arms 3 are integral with an annular guide 4 which has a frustro-conical internal surface corresponding to the outer surface of a die 5 formed in two halves, which when closed form a channel of the shaoe required to neck the detonator. The two halves are urged apart by springs 7 in holes near the centre of gravity of the die. which is dove-tailled into a stem 8 having a rearward extension 9 between which a piston 10 with a crosshead 11 is reciprocated. A flanged ring 31 joins the ends of the extensions 9 and acts as a stop for the cross-head. When the piston is retracted, the crosshead bearing against the ring 31 pulls pack the extensions 9 and the stem 8 together with the @ 5, the halves of which are then forced apart by the springs 7. The ring 31 compresses a spring 12 against a bearing 13. Rotation of the stem 8 is prevented by a bolt 15 the head of which slides in a slot 14 in the body 1 of the machine. Through a second slot 16, detonator tubes 19 are fed to a slot 17 in the stem 8 from which the tubes fall into the axial channel in the stem when the piston is retracted. A coupling 20 connects the piston to driving means. The fuze assembly, comprising lead wires 22 passing through a resilient plug 24 and terminating in a matchhead 23, is introduced into the front of the die while in the retracted position. The forward stroke of the piston pushes the detonator tube over the plug, and tube and plug then advance together into the converging portion of the die to form the neck.
